So many times it has been asked, “Is it right for a Christian to be a model in fashion?”
The answer begins with this: The first person we should model is Jesus Christ.
When we sincerely reflect Him in our character, lifestyle, and appearance, we live a life that pleases the Lord.
The Bible says:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
—1 Corinthians 6:19–20
That means we cannot wear just anything designed under the sun. As believers, our standard is not the world’s opinion—our standard is Christ.
In today’s society, pictures are taken everywhere and by everyone. As Christians, we must be mindful of how we present ourselves.
Sensual posing is not Christ-like. As a Christian fashion designer, I don’t need to use sensuality to sell garments.
But the world often says:
“Show a little shoulder… some leg… maybe your chest…”
“Sex sells.”
Yet anything that goes against the will of God is sin, and sin leads to destruction.
At Ayanda Buyane Fashion Designer, our mission is to create garments that are both modest and beautiful. Even our posture and presentation will minister to others.
Remember:
“Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.”
—John 1:3
But Satan takes what God created and distorts it.
The devil’s plan is to send many to hell through sensual fashion and ungodly modelling but our aim is the opposite:
- To win souls through Modest Fashion
- To model Christ—with elegance, grace, and purpose.

How God Called Me into the Fashion World
“Ayanda Should you put on anything just because it was designed by a so-called fashion designer?”
This was the question that confronted me one afternoon in 1998. I was just coming home from tertiary classes, reflecting on life, when the Lord asked me this. Then He gently answered, “Just because someone has a gift for designing garments doesn’t mean you must wear everything they create.”
That moment planted a seed in my heart.
Years passed. Then in 2013, the Lord spoke again—this time more directly. A deep desire to become a fashion designer stirred within me. It was not about glam or fame—it was about purpose.
I told God, “Use me in the fashion world.”
I was overwhelmed by the love God has for humanity. I mean—how amazing that He can raise up a spirit-filled believer in fashion to capture the attention of unsaved designers!
I’m reminded of the Scripture: “To the Jew I became a Jew, that I might win the Jews” (1 Corinthians 9:20). God can use our gifts as a bridge to reach others.
He began to give me vision—designs that were unique, modest, and elegant. Garments that stood out, not because they were revealing, but because they carried God’s wisdom.
One day, someone will ask, “Your designs are modest, yet so beautiful. How do you do it?”
And I will simply say, “God gives me wisdom.”
That moment will be an open door to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And the promise in Deuteronomy 28:13—“The Lord will make you the head and not the tail”—will be fulfilled. But it’s not for pride. It’s so that in whatever field God places us, we can win souls and point people to Him.
That is the true purpose of our calling.
